About us

Huba Szeremley, founder of the Pannonian Wine Guild, began revitalising and expanding his family wineyards in 1992. Today, it is one of the best known family estates around Mount Badacsony and Lake Balaton. Thanks to many international awards won, the company (First Hungarian Wine House - Domaine Szeremley Ltd.) is well known as a leading producer both on the domestic market and in international wine circles. The main aim of our company is, by simultaneously using modern technologies and respecting local vine growing and wine making traditions, to preserve the natural harmony so typical of Badacsony wines. You too, can taste all the beauties of our wine region by tasting a Szeremley, as these outstanding wines reflect perfectly the microclimate ruled by the volcanic and basaltic terroir. The golden gleam of our wines in the tasting glass bring you all the wonders of Badacsony. We welcome all wine experts and enthusiasts to taste together with us the Szeremley harmony in our cellar or our restaurant, on the quaint slopes of Mount Badacsony.

Mr. Szeremley

The Szeremley Estate became well-known around the World in 2001, when we received a third of all the international prizes won by Hungarian wines at major international contests, such as Challenge International in Bordeuax and Vinitaly in Verona, where we even won the Premio Speciale in both 2001 and 2002, as the most successful Hungarian winery. Our winery won three gold medals at the Riesling du monde in Strasbourg, and a Silver at Muscat du monde held in Frontignanban. Each year several medals show the success of Szeremley wines: Vinalies International (Paris), Mondial de Bruxelles, Grand Prix (Hamburg Wine Saloon), IWSC (London). Our wines are currently exported to 18 countries around the World, including countries where we act as pioneers promoting quality Hungarian wine. .

The terraces on the volcanic slopes of Mount Badacsony, overlooking Lake Balaton, give the well-known character to our wines. Protected from northerly winds, and warmed by the mass of water in Lake Balaton, the Southern slopes of Mount Badacsony have a unique mediterranean microclimate. Here, the rays of the Sun reach the grapes in three ways: not only from above, but also reflecting from the surface of Lake Balaton. At night, the black basalt stones radiate the Black Sun: warmth that was swallowed during the day borrows the wine mild fireiness. Due to their high minerality and delicious acids, even the driest wines from Badacsony have a special exctract sweetness, mildness and roundness, leading to large potentials for long-term ageing.

Today, the Szeremley family cultivates 115 hectares of vineyards in the heart of the Balaton Uplands National Park. Our winery is best known for its native Hungarian wines: the female Kéknyelű (Blue Stem), which has been a cpesiality of Badacsony for centuries; its pollinating pair, the Budai Zöld (Buda Green, once a well-known wine of the Buda wine region but now only to be found in Badacsoiny); Zeus became known around the World as the late harvest speciality of our winery, harmonising sweetness with extraordinary acidity, as well as its sister, the Olaszrizling late harvest which is full of citruses and reminds us of the tropics. As well as the Szürkebarát (Pinot Gris) and our extra dry and parfumy Muscat Ottonel, which is beloved also as an apéritife, Riesling Selection (the marriage of Rhine Riesling and Olaszrizling) became an immediate success.

Going back to Badacsony traditions, we are eager to make the wine region well-known also for its red wines. Beside Pinot Noir, our main blue variety, we produce Kékfrankos, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and the almost extinct Bakator. Our reds are aged in Hungarian made barrique, produced in the area.

The average age of our vineyards is 12 years, with 3800 vines per hectare (5000 in new plantations). By allowing only 8-12 buds to grow per vine, thus limiting yield to 1.0-1.5 kg, we secure optimal ripening conditions for our vines. By using controled fermentation, our wines are mostly aged in stainless steel tanks using the reductive method, but in the 7 cellars of our company large oak casks and barrique barrels can also be found.
